Here are 10 hacks for easy apartment setup.

1. Rent furniture

One of the most burdensome tasks of moving day is lugging that heavy sofa up three flights of stairs. Of course, all of this could be avoided if you decide to rent some furniture. Company dependent, there are often people to deliver and move the rented furniture for you. If possible, do this before the big move-in day so you have the structure of your apartment all ready to go.

2. Organize and label boxes (side and top)

Apartment set-up is the worst when it is unorganized. It may be tempting to throw everything anywhere that fits at the last minute because you think you’ll remember later. You won’t. You’ll be scrambling to find everything because you have no idea where it is. Place like items in like boxes like all your desk items in one box, toiletries in one box, etc.

Don’t forget to label them on the top and sides so you can read them stacked as well.

3. Categorize

With this, categorize your boxes into rooms. You may think you know which room the box “desk” goes in, but the people helping you move may not. So put labels on where the box should go as well. This way, whomever is lugging those boxes up the stairs for you knows exactly where to place them without having to ask you every single time.

4. Keep your clothes on the hangers (or roll them)

Nothing makes setting up worse than hanging up all your clothes again, especially if you have a large closet. If you’d rather skip that part, try placing trash bags over sections of your clothes still on their hangers. Simply rubber band the hanger tops together and tie the trash bag around the clothes and voila! Easy, transportable clothes that won’t have to be hung up again.

If your clothes aren’t on hangers and you’re cramming them into boxes, try rolling them instead of folding them. They’ll take up less space.

5. Take pictures

Now if you’re moving from one apartment to the other and like the aesthetic of your last one, make sure to take pictures of your decor before taking it down. You’ll expect to know where everything goes, but you’d be surprised how much your brain can forget in a day. Also take pictures of important things like the wiring of your television setup or anything else that may be complicated to ensure setup success.

6. Cover your liquids

Nothing is worse than unpacking a box just to find that your shampoo has spilled and ruined everything. The lids of your liquids may seem secure, but all the jostling of moving can make them totally useless. Before moving, put sealed plastic baggies over all your liquids and creams to ensure the worst doesn’t happen.

7. Find free boxes at grocery stores

Many of us don’t have loads of boxes lying around our apartments. Fear not, there is an easy way to combat your lack of moving containers. Almost all grocery stores have a large surplus of cardboard boxes that they would be happy to do away with.

All you have to do is find an employee and ask for some cardboard boxes for moving and they’ll be happy to hook you up. It’s a win-win for everybody involved.

8. Label and wrap your cords

Just like your boxes, labeling is key when it comes to moving success. This includes your wires and cables. Right now, they’re spaced out just how you want them, but after you move, they’re all bound to look exactly the same. Be sure to either place them in the same box and the thing they connect to and label their use. Also, wrap them up — don’t shove them in boxes with everything else or they’ll get so tangled you won’t want to bother with them later.

9. Use suitcases

Don’t forget about those suitcases sitting in the back of your closet! They’re extremely useful for moving. Not only can they hold lots of things, but they also roll. If possible, place your really heavy things (like books) into your suitcase so that you can roll them around rather than break your back carrying them.

10. Wrap your things in other things

Don’t waste your money buying bubble wrap for breakable things when you already have the padding you need. Utilize your clothing like socks, shirts, and scarves to wrap up your breakable things. It saves space both ways and eliminates the waste you create by moving!

Following these steps will ensure the setup of your next apartment move to be as easy and stress-free as possible!
